Montenegro possible candidate for the EU at the end of 2010

On Wednesday (October 14), the European Commission published its annual report on European Union enlargement which gives a summary of the progress made over the last year by would-be EU members.
The EC promised to inform the opinion on Montenegrin candidacy for full membership in the EU, the so called avis, next autumn. This opens the possibility for Montenegro to obtain the status of a candidate for membership in the EU at the end of next year.
According to the report, the overall picture of EU-Montenegro relations is positive. The country has continued to make progress in addressing the political criteria, with the spring's parliamentary elections meeting almost all international criteria.
Montenegro needs to intensify its efforts so as to consolidate the rule of law. It also needs to focus on the fight against corruption and organized crime, which remains a serious problem.
Montenegro presented its candidacy for EU membership in December 2008.
