Triumphant Montenegro PM outlines ambitious plan

31.03.2009

In an interview with The Associated Press, Montenegro's prime minister says now that his pro-Western coalition has won a landslide election victory he plans to push his young Balkan state toward the European Union and NATO.

Milo Djukanovic also told The Associated Press that the tiny nation's economy, which had some of the biggest growth in Europe since splitting from Serbia in 2006, may need additional foreign loans to make it through "the natural disaster" caused by the global financial crisis.

Montenegro's state electoral commission on Tuesday has confirmed the convincing victory of Djukanovic's European Montenegro coalition during a weekend election.

It said the preliminary vote count showed that Djukanovic's camp won 48 out of 81 seats in the national assembly, allowing it to form a new government on its own. Djukanovic called the vote 18 months early, saying he wanted a new mandate for painful economic and social reforms needed to bring the country closer to the European Union and NATO membership.
