Parliamentary elections in Montenegro

29.03.2009

Parliamentary elections are underway in Montenegro with 16 parties and coalitions running in the elections, but only four are expected to win a place in the 81-seat parliament.

Longterm leader Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic called the vote 18 months early, saying he wanted a new mandate for economic and social reforms needed to bring the country closer to the European Union and NATO membership.

Latest surveys indicate that Djukanovic's ruling coalition "European Montenegro" is likely to gain an outright majority. The 47-year-old politician played a major role in leading Montenegro to independence from Serbia which was achieved in a referendum in 2006.

More than 1,200 international and local observers are to monitor today’s polls. Official early results are expected by midnight local time.
