Montenegro a step closer to EU membership talks

European Union ministers voted on April 23 2009 to pass on to the European Commission the question of Montenegro's application for membership of the EU.
Montenegro will be asked to submit formal replies to a number of questions so that the EC can assess its suitability to join the EU.
"The council reaffirms that the future of the Western Balkans lies in the European Union," said the council in a statement.
But it added that each country's progress toward accession depends on its individual efforts to comply with the criteria and the conditionality of the Stabilization and Association Process.
Montenegro presented its application for EU membership in December 2008.
